Evaluation of previous covers and contents pages.

 

For the first peice of work in AS media, what I had to do was to have a look at some old versions of magazine covers and contents -pages. once we had a look at them we were asked to give them a rate which what I would have done is to go through it, then say what I liked, if it worked well.

Then we would have said what they could have done to improve it, this is what i would have come up with once i had finished.

 

 

 

 

 

1.)    The first one is good due to the fact on the cover it has good pictures on this of students who are working good and getting all of the work done right away, also it is good because it is showing what would be included as the best articles in the magazine so if you would want to read what they would see as being the best you might be more likely to pick it up and buy if you are interested in what they are saying, they show the price nice and clearly with a different colour and making sure that it stands out, have a little deal at the bottom about a free lunch which is something that they would want to get so it would again make the chance of it being brought more likely.

 

The contents page is good also because they are using the schools colours and that it is not over crowded so you do not know what you should be reading, it shows what the main issues are and what would make them look better and to provide students and parents an insight on what the students would be doing and how well they would actually be doing.

 

 

However the disadvantages of the front cover is that it does not look that appealing due to the layout of it and they look as if they have not planned out where things would have gone so when they came to do it they knew what they wanted to write but not where to put it and this is why it all looks a bit jumbled 

The disadvantages of the contents page again are that it is not that appealing. The logo in the middle of the page looks really out of place, it does not look like it should be there and it was just something that was used to take out some room. Also the bottom segment about Vivo’s is very hard to read unless you try hard to read it so it was not a good choice of colour for the font.

2.)    The advantages of the front cover would have been the use of the photo, again the same as the first photo it has shown students hard at work reading through a book while being dressed quite smartly, having the school logo there is also a good choice because it goes well with the colours that they have chosen and has shown why the colours have been chosen, they also picked up key facts on why it would make you buy this and has somethi9ng for everyone, for the boys have the sport, for the girls and the parents have more of the reading on school reports and for everyone they have how to do good in exams which would be helpful for everyone so that when the year would have progressed and it comes to the exam period people would remember these techniques.

The contents page is good because it is simple and it is not overcrowded, this is something which may put people off if they have lots of detail and everything which is listed in the magazine, also it is good because it actually tells you what page and for how long the article would go on so you could see which page to go onto.

However some of the disadvantages of the cover is that it is really dark, this is not good because it will not stand out, this is because whenever you want something it should always stand out with the writing and the photos which are sued which in this they are not, everything is too dark so you wouldn’t be able to see this just on a quick glance.

A disadvantage of the contents page is that it does not mention anything which is the magazine like it does not have any detail on what it is or make it sound that interesting, so when you would have a quick look it does not make you think that you want to read that single article, also it is only articles they are showing they are not showing anything that would make you interested and something that does not have much reading like this does.

 

 

3.)    The cover is a very good one, because it is light so you can see it and it would have made it stand out, it has more detail about what it would include, it has a lot of detail and the photo of someone who seems very happy, showing that when you would come to sixth form it would be a good and happy thing  so you should do it, it has the price on it (uts free which is always good for students who don’t have much money) so it would be a good use of looking for the target audience, which it looks like they have done a lot of research into looking at what all of the articles are aimed at.

The advantage of the contents page is the same, it is good because they have nice photos and have a photo of the front cover too, all of the photos are of people smiling which is always important, and it actually has details which are leading into what you have done and what it is going to be of, and it is a good way of being able to lure the reader in.

The disadvantage of the cover is that it has a lot going on and this is something that might be able to put someone off of the magazine as they would not know where to look and when something is too crowded it does not look the professional, and maybe they have used too many photos.

In the contents page it is the same story, at first glance it does look a bit crowded, so again when stuck between two you have to make sure that it is not too bad. The use of blue on blue is not a good combination because it is hard on the eyes to be able to see, and may have to try harder to read.

 

4.)    The cover is a really good one, as it has someone working, and showing that he is smiling when doing it, showing underneath about being overwhelmed, it shows that maybe this guy was struggling but now he has been able to pick it up by using the ten hints that they would have given, they have free things which is always a good selling point, it would be something that when you have seen it you may want to get it more then before and may be a way of persuading someone to get your magazine, it is not over crowded, it is a very professional front cover because of the use of what they have done and giving the people what they want again making sure that they did really understand the target audience.

The contents page was good again using the front cover as a little picture, showing what pages things are on which again was good, they have given more details on what is inside, which may make readers want to have a look in more depth.

Disadvantage of the front cover may have been to show the price a bit clearer as I struggles to find the price but apart from that it was a good cover

The contents page could have used a bit of work though, this is because some of the colours were not good together, as it is hard to read and you do have to focus. And they could have changed the layout a bit and by doing this they may have been able to make it look a bit more professional.
